Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
