Christantus Uche Sparks Straightforward Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Missing key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, particularly following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season proved no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
